Baytii means my home. The mark is É — the Sumerian sign for “house”, and the oldest written word for a home anywhere. Writing was invented here; this is the word it was invented to write.اسم بيتي لا يحتاج ترجمة. أما العلامة فهي É، الرمز السومري لـ«البيت» — وأقدم ما كُتبت به هذه الكلمة في العالم. الكتابة وُلدت في هذه الأرض، و«البيت» من أوائل ما كتبته.
We redrew it as fresh stylus impressions on a glazed tile: two horizontal wedges, two small verticals between them, one tall final stroke. The house sign, pressed today.أعدنا رسمها كأثر مِرقَم على طين طري، فوق قاشانية مزجّجة: إسفينان أفقيان، وعمودان صغيران بينهما، وضربة أخيرة طويلة. علامة البيت، مطبوعة اليوم.
The colours come from the two most Iraqi surfaces there are — the deep glazed lapis of the Ishtar Gate brick and the warm Kashi gold of tilework — on ivory, never on stark white.أما الألوان فمن أكثر سطحين عراقيَّين: لازورد بوابة عشتار المزجّج، وذهب القاشاني الدافئ في الزخرفة — على أرضية عاجية، لا على أبيض ناصع.
